Many Faces of the Ego
Eight years ago, my coach introduced Dr. Shefali (the founder of conscious parenting and Oprah’s favorite parenting expert) to me. I Googled her name, watched her TED Talk, fell in love, and have been her avid student since. Without her teachings, I couldn’t have tapped into my limitless essence and wouldn’t have known my soul’s calling. Also, I’m now honored to be endorsed and certified by her.
In her latest book, The Radical Awakening, she discusses the many faces of the ego. The ego is a protective mechanism that was created in childhood to guard us against our caregivers’ unconsciousness.
We wear one or more of these masks in our personal and professional life. Here are the three main masks and their sub-templates as described by Dr. Shefali:
- The givers
- The controllers
- The takers
GIVERS:
- The victim
- The martyr
- The savior
- The bleeding empath
CONTROLLERS
- The perfectionist
- The helicopter
- The tyrant
- The shield
TAKERS
- The diva
- The princess
- The child
Which masks do you think you and your loved ones wear?
Understanding our ego protective mechanism can empower us to dis-identify with our thoughts, beliefs, and habitual patterns. After all, these are just neural networks in our brain, and we can re-wire them if we desire.
